Welcoming our Indigenous Learners
The HGE staff have continued to look for ways for us to meet the Calls to Actions presented in by Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. One of our goals is to ensure that our Indigenous learners feel welcome in our school community. In addition, we are looking for ways for all learners to learn about Indigenous culture as well as ways knowing, being, and doing. In January, the school introduced several structures to help achieve this goal including:
  • Posted Okanagan language room signs around the school
  • Named each wing of our school for one of the Okanagan Nation's Four Food Chiefs (Black Bear, Bitterroot, Saskatoon Berry, and Salmon)
  • Invited our Indigenous students to lead the acknowledgement of territory over the school announcements every Wednesday.
  • Purchased professional learning materials for teaching staff to help them weave Indigenous ways of knowing into the curriculum as required by BC's curriculum
